There are many ways to describe an air source heat pump and you will have seen more of them than you think. The technology is not that new, but recent improvements mean they are now far more usable to heat a domestic home.

If you think of an air source heat pump as a fridge that works in reverse, you will be quite near to how it works. A fridge takes the heat from the food that you put in, and by using a process of condensing and evaporating chills a liquid/gas to produce the cold desired effect.

With an air source heat pump, any heat in the air (even working down to and below 0 deg C) when blown across the evaporator in the unit boils a specialist liquid to produce a gas that triggers the process of generating heat. They do use electricity to do this, but they generate on average between 2.5 and 3.5kW of heat for every kW of electricity you use, making them very efficient.
