You've probably seen the headlines about the proposed 3p per mile EV tax from 2028. While it may sound like bad news, electric vehicles are still significantly cheaper to run than petrol or diesel cars.
💡 Typical running costs per mile:
⚡ Electric car (home off peak charging): around 2p per mile
⚡ Electric car (average UK electricity tariff): around 6p per mile
⛽ Petrol car: around 14 - 18p per mile
🚙 Diesel car: typically similar to or more expensive than petrol, depending on the vehicle
Even after adding the proposed 3p per mile tax, an EV charged at home could still cost around 5p per mile to run, that's still around 67% cheaper than a typical petrol car.
