EV Charging Points Installations
Why Home EV Charging Is Essential
The ICE (internal combustion engine) needs to be replaced with something that is cleaner, better for the environment and our health, with more and more evidence of diesel particulates causing ill health, especially in children, we are all having to embrace EV’s sooner rather than later.
EV charging points will be a necessity when you buy your first electric vehicle. You can charge your vehicle with a EV charging unit that plugs directly into a standard 3 pin socket as we have throughout our homes. It will take in some cases several days to charge the batteries, where a 7kW EV charger will happily do this job overnight whilst you sleep, with even the biggest current batteries in an EV of 100kWh charging in 14 hours from basically flat to full.
Why Have EV Charging Points?
- Convenience – You can charge overnight while you sleep. No detours, no queues, no hunting for public chargers
- Cheaper Charging – Home electricity is usually much cheaper than public rapid chargers – especially if you use off-peak or EV tariffs
- Time Saving – Plug in when you get home and wake up to a full battery. Way easier than waiting around at charging stations.
- More Reliable – Public chargers can be busy or out of order. A home charger is always there when you need it.
- Faster than a normal socket – A proper home EV charger is much quicker and safer than using a standard 3-pin plug.
- Adds value to your property – As EV’s become more common, having a charger can make your property more attractive to buyers or renters.
- Better for the environment – It encourages regular EV use and can be paired with solar panels or green energy tariffs.

How EV Charging Works
If you have a 3 phase supply, which is more common in commercial buildings but can also be found in larger domestic homes, your EV charging point can be increased quite simply to a 22kW unit. This will charge almost all of the electric vehicles currently available from 10% to full in around 4 hours, adding in most cases hundreds of miles of motoring.
EV chargers come in various forms, our preferred unit is the Zappi which is made in the UK by a UK company that has a great reputation. They make many other units that can compliment your EV charger, especially if you have PV fitted to your property. The Zappi electric car charger will combine very effectively with a range of home storage batteries and smart HW systems that really do make the most of the current offerings from energy supply companies and their ever changing tariffs.

EV Charging Points FAQs
There are government grants available to help with the cost of your EV charger. Contact us to learn more.
Currently the cars are more expensive to buy, but there are very attractive deals making their way in to the marketplace and the price of the batteries is dropping so we expect to see EV and ICE cars at a similar level within the next 2-3 years.
This depends on the vehicle, so called self charging hybrids do not have a charging connection (or a very good range on the battery) but everything else can be charged.
You do not need to have a charger at home and some properties do not lend themselves to an installation, but having the option to charge the car overnight on cheaper electricity is a bonus that should not be given up lightly.
This depends on the car and the charger along with the current state of the battery, but the 7kW chargers that we would normally fit at a home would charge your vehicle from 10% to 80% charged within 5-9 hours.
